highline

c and i walked the highline this past saturday. the weather could not have been more perfect. here's a short account, seeing as all others on the internets are a few years old.

we entered through the truckyard on 33rd st between 11 and 12 ave. there was no guard and we got in no problems. if you're not able to jump up to the track through the trucks (as we were not), it's possible to walk all the way down to the back of the lot and climb down into weeds as tall as you are, and then get to the track from there. we encountered a friendly lirr employee who warned us if we were caught, we'd be arrested. other than that, we walked the entire length without encountering anyone else. the first fence had a small door carved in it; i'm unsure how a bigger person would be able to manage to get through. the second fence had the hole at the bottom, where someone helpfully laid a plank. it was here i found a phone that had apparently been lost the day before (i returned it yesterday - losing your phone sucks!). i think the coolest part was the enclosed station with the old tunstyles. we walked all the way to 14th street and turned back to investigate the stairway at 17th st. the stairs were indeed cut off, but the main problem was the entire area was fenced in. a guard came over as i was looking for a way to squeeze through and told me i'd have to go back. this was a huge bummer as a cold drink at the red rock was beckoning us bigtime. i think the walk down took an hour and a half with lots of stops for photo taking, and back it was 40 minutes tops. overall, very cool and totally worth it.

some pics.
