i've been appalled by the applicants for an internship at my company. i seriously don't know what's wrong with kids these days, but here are a few pointers.

-if you're applying for an INTERNSHIP, your resume should only be 1 page
-there should be zero spelling mistakes on your resume
-if you're a designer, sending a word doc resume isn't acceptable. are you a designer or an accountant?
-if english isn't your first language, you should really have someone look over your docs
-if someone asks you for a resume, cover letter and work samples, send what they're asking for
-your files shouldn't be 19mgs that take my computer 5 minutes to load
-if my name is in the job ad, i expect your cover letter to be addressed to me and especially not to "mr. tandry"

I went to Bowery ballroom last night for the first time in forever. In fact, it's been so long since I hung out in that neighborhood I had to look up directions on how to walk there. It's still one of my favorite venues, even though beer prices have ballooned to $7. It opened when I was 16, and I used to get to shows way early in the day and camp out on the sidewalk just so I could get front row. I actually sat on the sidewalk. Way before whole foods was even a thought in ny, burger king was the only food option a few blocks away. I miss that new York a lot.

No real point to this, but I was sitting by the door last night and smirking at jackasses who walked in and were like, this is my first time here! I kind of miss hanging out in that hood, although I know the reality of it is too different from my recollection of it, as evidenced the few times I do venture into the city. It was so much more fun just 3-4 years ago.

so i'm two days into my trial crunch membership and so far, so good. i'd have to say out of any gym i've been to, the clientele is the fittest here although that could also be because the demographic skews slightly younger. i've taken two classes so far, and i've come to recognize the obsessive class takers. they're the ones who were hooting and hollering in yesterday's spin class (i could picture them hanging out the roof of a douchey stretch limo doing the same). then there are the ones who really love themselves. today there was one girl standing a foot away from the mirror the entire class, STARING at herself. maybe i'm wrong and that is what she has to do to get through the class, but i swear i saw her giving herself a few drew barrymore-esque cheesy, exaggerated winks. yuck.

i may also have nightmares in which WEEERRRRRK and FAAAAAASTER are yelled at me.

the food was a total letdown! i was obsessed with trying an avocado margarita from curra's, it sounded strange but awesome. i like avocados, i like margaritas. what was delivered was a more opaque margarita that tasted like a normal lime one. so disappointed! nb was obsessed with trying migas. i had two renditions, one probably less authentic (more a breakfast taco with cheese on it) which tasted better, and one scrambled with the tortillas in. totally forgettable. speaking of, breakfast tacos. what is so special about scrambled eggs in a taco-sized tortilla?? nothing! really unimpressed...

what i did like was which wich, which doesn't have any branches in ny - boo! damn tasty sandwiches. ok, i am feverish and need to get back to bed. i am impatiently waiting for my mother to bring me some kombucha!!

the regulars, the people who do this as a career - full or part-time - are total weirdos. they're into it, as you would have to be, but TOO into it. constantly inventing characters and scenarios in their heads. i had to pick up fake "talking" in a hurry. then there's another category, the ones who want to be famous/stars. doing this is probably the place to start, unless one has amazing luck. i fall into the last category, the ones who are unemployed and looking to get some income. the sad thing is, i am working slightly fewer hours extraing, INCLUDING commute (which i'm not paid for) than i was doing production design for that show that shall not be mentioned, not including commute time. AND i am making more per day. doing production design, i was seriously busting my ass and there was plenty of manual labor. today was spent mostly sitting and doing some reading. marginal walking and standing. that, my friends, is sad.

i heard about these bars from my yoga teacher several years ago. i promptly tried them since i trust her opinion in just about anything. they were delicious and good for you, much unlike power bars. the three nutritional facts i clearly remember are fat: 5g, carbs: 20g or less, sugar: 10g or less. pretty healthy snack, no?

so i've continued eating them ever since. i happened to glance at the nutritional info the other day and was pretty shocked to see: fat: 8g, carbs: 32g, sugars: 23g. not nearly as healthy as before. they look the same and taste the same, so what happened. i emailed them over a week ago about this, and they never responded. i'm pretty bummed about it. no such thing as consumer transparency, huh?

the tour was due to start at 1:15. we got there plenty early, but waited in the wrong line. the tour is massive, definitely 40-50 people. i was thinking more along the lines of 10-20, but no. at 2, there were still people coming up from the previous tour. it was really cold last week, and both of our feet were completely frozen. so basically, there is no need to call up beforehand to reserve a spot because they did not check names. we left sometime around 2:10 because it didn't seem worth the wait of over an hour in the cold. i'll be back in the spring on a nice day, prepared to wait 1+ hour to go down.

a review i posted of my most favorite UNPAID INTERNSHIP of all time. to be anonymous here so i don't get sued...

Out of the 10+ internships I have had over the past 10 years, this was the WORST. I was told during the interview I would be involved in the creative process and it would be very hands-on. Some of the tasks I ended up doing: arranging lamp shades and vases in the office by size order, vacuuming the rug, walking the dogs and picking up their poop.. I have 2 degrees and a professional accreditation - talk about being under-utilized. It's my strong belief that they wanted someone to do all the dirty grunt work in the office for free. I didn't learn a thing and didn't even open CAD up once. Do not work here unless you are a robot (mistakes are not tolerated and you will be fired for them!) who doesn't mind doing bullshit work and enjoys working in the most anal, oppressive environment imaginable (The number on the stereo volume dial was spec'd in the employee handbook - why didn't I run then and there?). The way they treated me is disgusting and kind of turned me off the industry - isn't the premise of an unpaid internship that the slave laborer will take/learn something? I truly believe there's more than a bit of evil in some of the employees here.

this is the place that fired me under the pretense of a messy binder - which my boss probably did, and then didn't pay for my metrocard as was verbally agreed. it was all of $25, which i'm sure would have really broke their bank but could have helped me out some. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING.

birthday fails

28 has proven to be the worst birthday. i was apprehensive about going to a wedding over the weekend and flying home on my birthday, but did it anyway. the first flight out was delayed almost 3 hours. luckily, the airport had free wifi but still! then we missed the connecting flight by 20 minutes - it was also delayed but didn't wait for us. we were on stand-by for a 9:30pm flight and trying desperately to get confirmed on any flight to anywhere in the tri-state area because if not, we'd be spending the night in atlanta in the airport because delta was not going to comp us a hotel room. after much anxiety, i think they changed the flight to a bigger plane and 2 seats opened up. 9:30 delayed to 10 which delayed to 10:51. we spent over 4 hours in that airport. it was pure hell!

renouncing sunday as my birthday since it was so shit, i decided to do a small celebration yesterday. i don't know what is going on, but i can't even catch a mini-break. i had an interview for a job job and a temp in hr screwed up and the woman i was interviewing with wasn't in the office. i went down to chinatown to buy some frozen dumplings and two stores were completely out. more wasted time and money! well i got nice and wasted last night anyways.

i witnessed a crocodile attack at manuel antonio national park

a mere 5 minutes before it happened, our guide was telling us a crocodile was spotted in the water the day before, then commented how there were people in the water the day of. they sometimes cross the 25 or so feet of land to the beach from their estuary during the night, and sometimes one doesn't make it back to the estuary by morning because the water is cloudy or something. i was standing in the shade looking out at the water. there were about 5 people in the water, not far out... a middle-aged woman screamed and i knew what it was immediately. i couldn't believe it was happening and felt totally helpless. i don't think anyone else knew what was going on, but she continued to scream for her life and her head was dragged under the water a few times. the bf thought she had cramps or something. in fact i'm sure most people had no idea what was going on since you could not see the croc from the shore. the couple swimming near her started running out of the water, then the man started pulling her arm, trying to get her out. two other guys, one from my tour group, ran into the water to get her out and they finally succeeded. the crocodile had bitten her ass and was clamping down, trying to drag her down and drown her. it could have been a lot worse had it bitten a leg. i can't imagine the sheer terror of enjoying a beautiful beach, then looking back and seeing a 10-12 foot crocodile right there. the guy in my group said as he reached her in the water, only then could he see the crocodile and its head was over a foot long. it was one of the most terrifying things i've ever seen. curiously enough, the rangers were amongst the slowest to react. after the attack, the croc could be seen swimming in the water. i do have to question having a beach open where something like this could happen.

my academic life has alienated me from my friends who don't understand it and its demands and pressures. it really has not been my choice to stay in night after night, toiling away. i graduated two weeks ago from my associates program and am now studying to take a big test at the end of the month that will hopefully make me more marketable to employers. that means i have no life until then. i had a weeks' respite in between the workload, and i was pretty bummed that only one friend seemed to want to go out and do shit with me. i was also bummed that someone i consider one of my closest friends has not said one word yet on my finishing school, the most grueling 1.5 years of my life. i know everyone has their own life and things going on, and i have not been as involved in my friends' lives as i would like, but this really stings. it just makes me reevaluate people and their importance to me and vice versa. i don't want my bf to be my sole support system as i've been there and was miserably isolated after the relationship ended - not to mention bf doesn't remember things like when projects are due or when my first day of work is - but it seems like i'm being pushed in that direction.

i work in an industry that, since the recession, has made use of unpaid internships. it probably always has, but it has gotten really bad now. last summer i had an internship with just one semester of school under my belt, and i got a pretty fair stipend for my work. but over the spring, i held two internships where i was not even given travel expenses. technically, i paid the $4 commute to work - for free. internships are for learning about an industry, gaining experience, and for the resume. under normal economic conditions, they are also used to perhaps get a foot in the door and eventually get hired at the company. now it's a real damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. most people are willing to take these unpaid internships because there are no available paid jobs. and if they don't, there are 10 other people willing to take their place. so what are we to do, if we want to remain in this industry? it is either an unpaid internship or leaving the industry to find a paid position elsewhere. last month i felt myself getting to the end of my rope with this whole unpaid thing. i know in the past, people could have gotten hired with just one internship. i have now completed three internships and this summer, will be taking on # 4 and 5. i certainly have enough experience to warrant a paid position, but no one is willing. an internship i initially accepted under the conditions of working 2-3 days a week came back at me, wanting me to work full-time. for free. 40 hours a week, probably more, for nothing. i have witnessed first-hand how certain companies totally abuse what is already an offense. it is DISGUSTING for a 9 person design studio to have 8 interns running around. it is likewise reprehensible to have intern emails as intern1, intern2 etc, numbering into the 10s and 20s. i have about reached the end of what an intern can learn, doing intern duties. but i am stuck. and then my dear friend sent me this article, which made my blood boil.

given i don't know what the situation is like in england, but some of those comments by asswad architects really made my head explode. this unpaid shit should be illegal. i will see if a PAID position develops over the summer. if not, i really don't have any choice but to leave the industry, at least for a little while.

We rescued Bradley from the shelter last night, and today I took him to a neurologist.

The doctor had only sad news for Bradley...

We agreed he should go to sleep and not suffer this severe hydrocephalus. (as you can see, his head is weirdly shaped due to a lot of fluids in his head / brain).

I didn't want to let him go yet, so from the vet I took Bradley to the beach, I sat with him, played with him, and I fed him many cheeseburgers and fried chicken.

We sat there for two hours, and after that I took him to the vet's office right on the beach, and he went to sleep forever :-(

It was such a sad day... I cried like a baby for this little guy. Even now when I am typing these words, tears are coming to my eyes...

I came across these photos yesterday on Flickr member Eldad Hagar's photostream and my heart melted. Once I read that description under these photos, my heart broke (and I cried, and my sister and boyfriend cried when I sent them the link). You see, Eldad rescues and fosters dogs from local shelters and has created a non-profit animal rescue organization called "Hope For Paws". To try and keep Hope For Paws up and running, they've created a book which is for sale on their website that includes photos of the animals they've fostered, and it's only $9.95. I bought 2. It's so wonderful what they do these poor sick animals that wouldn't have a chance if left at a shelter. I was so touched by the story that I had to share it, despite the fact that it has nothing to do with design. But it does have to do with a big part of who I am, and my love for animals so I had to share this story, and I hope I can get a few people over to their site and buy a book, or 2. (P.S. I just received an email from Eldad (got me tearing up again) who mentionned that Bradley's condition could have been prevented but he was dumped at the shelter by a "backyard breeder" who didn't care enough. Bradley was blind from the pressure to his brain, and likely had the worst headache in the world. Good news though, Eldad captured 2 more stray dogs last night and they are getting the care they need).

girls, if only it were so easy to achieve such a striking, cool look. too bad it is not. i bought a bottle in black last weekend and immediately noticed that as soon as the polish dried (which was in minutes), cracks started to appear. cracks so deep i could see my nail underneathon some nails. totally unacceptable. i mean i wonder what kind of photoshop magic they did to create the illusion of a smooth finish?

totally lame. if they expect me to buy another $22 bottle of top coat... no thanks. the polish should function just fine on its own without investing $45 in it. i did send them an email a few days ago about it, but no response yet. so i'll take my complaint public in the means i have.

went to a party last night, and i'm still swimming in the pool of self-entitlement. while being kept waiting outside for them to get ready inside, every single group that came up went to the door to see if they could get in, although there was clearly a line. fashion people apparently also don't know how to wait on line. we were the second group waiting, and the line veered off to the right. arriving groups stood behind us, to the left. it was ridiculous. the last thing i have to say is, it's been a looong time since i've been around so many girls thinking they look hot, but really looking bad and dumb. honey, you may think that jumpsuit is fashion forward, but you really just look like you have 2 asses.

some of my old favorites are only playing large venues now, and really i can't deal with anything larger than webster hall. other bands whose older albums i loved have put out very meh new releases. i only read 2 music blogs now, and the mp3s i've sampled from them don't excite me. the rare occasion now that i make it out to small/local shows, i am utterly unimpressed. please help.

i went to yoga class today. getting there is harrowing enough, i have to take 3 trains am stressed about getting there on time. so, i pretty much like to relax as soon as i step in the door. i got a blanket and put it on the floor to save my spot. 5 minutes later, i came out of the dressing room and some lady was in my spot and i couldn't see my blanket. so i said ok... as i was untying my mat. i saw a blanket in the back row and thought maybe she'd shoved it there. she turned around and asked if she'd taken my spot and offered to move, i said no no, it's not a problem. there was, afterall, plenty of space. then a guy in the back row said he'd left the blanket to save a spot for his girlfriend AS ONE DOES, RIGHT. i said ok again and plonked my mat down in the corner. so not only did this lady take my spot, she also took my blanket?? is it not known from the age of 5 onwards that leaving something of yours in a place constitutes saving your spot? wtf?? i would have been happy to change spots if she'd waited until i came back and asked me then.

i felt some shame at being irritated and unyogic at a freaking yoga class, but seriously. it's a constant battle trying to remain calm in a city such as ny. i just did some very deep, loud breathing in the corner and luckily did a pretty cool transition for the first time and left feeling fine.

so i called today to complain about a building's super who has not yet cleared the sidewalk in front of the building. it's not my building, but i care because i walk past this bldg on my way to the subway and the ice is dangerous and i'm slipping and sliding all over the place. when i went out a few hours later, there was a walkway cleared. incredible! i'm just amazed no one who lives in the building complained because the stairs were covered in ice as well.

thanks for finally fixing the color printer, after it had been out of commission for what, 3 weeks? that was nice of you. today i ran around like a crazy person since only a few buildings have copy machines. in building #1, i tried using all 5 machines to get an 11 x 17 copy. none of them had that paper size. when i asked a staff member about it, she hurriedly opened the trays and then pointed at the 8.5 x 11 and said, "that's the biggest size we have!" and waved me off. in building #2, i tried one machine to no avail and finally, FINALLY, i was able to get my copy on the 7th machine.

now what in god's name an i paying $1,000 a credit for here? seems to me a leading design school should have their shit better together.

i've gotten out of the house, just a bit, for this year's festival. let's start with the big one: crystal castles. i was fully expecting to be blown away and have a great time dancing. not so. they are fucking horrible live. shockingly so. the music sounds exactly like the album of course, but alice. omg. so what if she rolls around on the ground and crowdsurfs. her vocals, or lack thereof, ruin the show. it sounds terrible when she is just yelling into the mic. i know the album well, yet i could not even discern some songs live. ugh. a massive letdown.

and now a little story. at crystal castles last night, me and minx stood right behind the soundbooth upstairs. we got there stupid early because the venue told us the wrong time. so basically, we'd been standing there the entire show. before crystal castles came on, minx left to get us drinks. this guy zooms into her spot. i think it was beyond obvious that she would be coming back, but i rolled my eyes and let him stand there in the interim. as she comes back, she yells, "my spot is gone!"

so i say, "my friend is back now."

asshole, "so?"

me, shocked, "so you have to move."

asshole, "no i don't. she can squeeze in."

me, "are you fucking kidding me?!"

i went on a rant about how he had seen her standing there and how i had never witnessed such a thing and how rude he was, and i couldn't believe it.

i went off to minx about what a DICK he was, what a motherfucking ASSHOLE. seriously, who does something like that? it's not like he wasn't tall enough to see over our heads. minx did get in next to me, but it was the principle that killed me. he had an accent and i have a suspicion where he was from, but it would be unkind to group a country with his kind. i was so angry i felt hot, whereas i'd been cold the entire night. my face was flushed and i was sweating. i cannot remember the last time i was so fucking angry. i kept muttering, "i'm SO fucking mad right now."

i kept at it, making sure to emphasize DICK and ASSHOLE. i even took his picture, saying i would send it to blogs. well i'm a person of my word, so without further ado, here he is.

i went to the diesel xxx party this past weekend. it was pretty much the worst open bar i've ever been to, a total shitshow. me and the biff tried to get at one bar and, after standing 4-5 deep and not moving for 20 minutes, concluded that we were standing at a bad spot the bartender didn't cover and decided to walk around for a bit. we then tried the other bar where we stood 6 deep. after 20 more minutes there, getting a drink became a thing of principal over need. we got to the party a bit before 10 and did not get any booze down until after 12:30. no joke. it didn't help that we had a shitty bartender at our end who took his time and really seemed to enjoy breaking bags upon bags of ice. by the time we were served, they were out of bourbon and vodka and had a bit of tequila and rum left, and shitty beer. that and i'd had this disgusting shovy/pushy girl PRESSED up against me for over 30 minutes.

it was just so remarkably bad. shocking considering it was diesel's last xxx party, i would have thought they had the formula down by now. perhaps they just didn't want to pay the salaries for more bartenders? i would have much preferred bringing my flask and trying to enjoy the music.
